[Excerpt from an email sent on 02/03/2009 on the occasion of my birthday]
I have always heard that friends are those people who will never let you down, who will always be by your side when you need them, who will come when needed...
Personally, I find this definition of a friend very selfish. It seems like a child’s definition... “Since I need my friends now and they don’t help me, then they are no longer my friends,” don’t you think?
Friends are human too, and they also have problems and projects that sometimes take them away from us. Friends make mistakes, just like we do.
Recently, Lluís Gavaldà gave a definition of a friend that I find ideal: A friend is someone who, even if they 'fail' you, even if you see them rarely, you still believe they are worth having as a friend.
No friend of mine has ever failed me, nor will they ever be able to... because I expect nothing from them except that they allow me to consider myself their friend.
